Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply on January 29, 2026, after the European Union formally designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation. The decision followed an emergency meeting of European foreign ministers and was announced by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, marking one of the most consequential policy shifts in EU–Iran relations in decades.

The move places the IRGC in the same category as internationally recognised militant groups such as ISIL and al-Qaeda under EU law, triggering expanded sanctions, asset freezes, and legal consequences for any engagement with the organisation. European officials framed the decision as a response to Iran’s violent crackdown on domestic protests, regional destabilisation, and its growing military alignment with Russia.

Strong EU Backing and New Sanctions Signal Policy Shift

Germany was among the strongest supporters of the designation, calling it an “overdue” decision that sends a clear political message to Tehran. The German Foreign Office stated that the EU was standing “side by side with the Iranian people” and vowed accountability for those responsible for what it described as systematic repression and abuse of the judicial system.

The decision was accompanied by a new round of targeted sanctions against Iranian officials accused of overseeing the suppression of protests earlier this month. According to EU officials, the measures aim to directly impact individuals responsible for internal security decisions rather than the Iranian population at large.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reinforced the bloc’s position, describing the IRGC designation as “long overdue” and asserting that Europe would not remain silent in the face of state-led violence against civilians.

Iran Condemns Decision, Warns of Severe Consequences

Iran reacted swiftly and forcefully. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi denounced the EU’s move as a “major strategic mistake” and accused European governments of hypocrisy, pointing to what Tehran describes as Europe’s inaction over Israel’s war in Gaza.

In a strongly worded statement, Iran’s armed forces warned that the consequences of what they called a “hostile and provocative” decision would be borne directly by European policymakers. Tehran also summoned Germany’s ambassador following remarks by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who stated that Iran’s leadership had lost legitimacy and that the regime’s “days are numbered.”

Iran’s response underscored the risk of diplomatic fallout, particularly as European interests in the region remain exposed through trade routes, energy markets, and maritime security.

Military Signals Escalation as Hormuz Tensions Rise

Adding to concerns of escalation, Iran warned commercial shipping of upcoming live-fire naval exercises in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil supply passes. The announcement raised fears of potential disruption to global energy markets, especially amid already heightened geopolitical volatility.

Iranian state media confirmed that the exercises would involve live ammunition, though no specific dates were provided. Analysts view the move as a strategic signal rather than a direct threat, aimed at demonstrating Iran’s capacity to respond militarily if tensions continue to escalate.

Israel Welcomes Decision, Opposition Voices Emerge Inside Iran

Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar welcomed the EU’s move, calling it a historic step that Israel had advocated for over several years. Saar claimed the designation would strike a major blow to the legitimacy of Iran’s governing structure and its regional influence.

Inside Iran, rare opposition voices also emerged. Former Prime Minister Mir Hossein Mousavi, currently under house arrest, issued a statement calling on Iran’s clerical leadership to relinquish power. Mousavi described the recent crackdown on protests as a “black page” in the country’s history and urged security forces to stand down.

His remarks, widely circulated by opposition media, added to the sense of political strain within Iran at a time of increasing international isolation.

US–Iran Confrontation Looms as Trump Issues Warning

Meanwhile, tensions between Washington and Tehran intensified further after Donald Trump stated that the United States was prepared to respond with “speed and violence” if Iran threatened American interests. Iranian officials responded by declaring that their armed forces were ready to respond “immediately and powerfully” to any attack.

The rhetoric on both sides has raised concerns among analysts that miscalculation could trigger a broader conflict, particularly given the concentration of military assets in the region and Iran’s expanding alliance with Russia.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha praised the EU’s sanctions, citing Iran’s alleged military support for Russia as a key factor behind the decision.
